ZINC ELECTROPLATING · ISO 4042 / ISO 19598 REFERENCE

Zinc Electroplating for Fasteners and Steel Components

Zinc electroplating inquiries should identify the steel or iron substrate, fastener or component type, coating-system designation, passivation or colour requirement, significant surfaces, thickness or performance criteria and required inspection evidence.

TECHNICAL SUMMARY

What to include in the inquiry

Use the applicable drawing and governing standard as the final authority. Other / Custom keeps unusual requirements inside the same RFQ.

ProcessElectroplated zinc coating system
Fastener referenceISO 4042:2022 and applicable contract amendment
Component referenceISO 19598:2016 when its scope and designation apply
Passivation inquiryBlue / Clear, Black or Other / Custom
Required definitionSubstrate, strength, significant surfaces, coating designation / thickness and functional criteria
Report optionsDFT / coating-thickness and salt-spray reports when specified

TECHNICAL REFERENCE

Coating and inspection tables

These tables identify the applicable technical reference and the information that must be agreed in the purchase specification. They do not replace the governing standard, drawing or customer acceptance criteria.

Technical fieldInformation to provideDo not assume

Coating systemGoverning standard and complete coating designation or customer specificationThe words ‘zinc plated’ define the full system
Significant surfacesSurfaces that must meet thickness, appearance or performance requirementsAll recessed, contact and rack areas are evaluated identically
Supplementary treatmentPassivation, sealant, top coat and lubricant where requiredFinish colour alone defines performance

What an inspection report should identify

Report content must follow the purchase order, governing standard and agreed inspection plan.

EvidenceWhat must be identifiedImportant boundary
Coating-thickness / DFT reportPart or lot identity, measurement method, measurement locations, units and recorded valuesThe method must suit the coating/substrate combination and part geometry; DFT is not a universal method name for every metallic coating.
Salt-spray reportTest standard and mode, specimen identity, exposure duration, evaluation intervals and agreed failure criterionA pass/fail conclusion requires acceptance criteria from the product or customer specification.
Visual and coverage inspectionSignificant surfaces, coverage, visible defects and any permitted contact or rack marksAppearance limits must be agreed; colour alone does not establish coating performance.
Functional verificationThread fit, masking, contact areas, dimensional limits or other drawing-defined featuresThe required checks depend on the component and are not implied by the coating name.

Reports are available when specified in the RFQ and confirmed in the quotation. Sampling, laboratories, witness points and acceptance criteria must be agreed before processing.

How to specify a salt-spray requirement

ISO 9227 defines the chamber, reagents and procedures for NSS, AASS and CASS testing. It does not assign a universal exposure period to a product.

RFQ itemBuyer should stateWhy it matters
Test methodThe governing product specification and the required salt-spray mode, such as NSS when applicableDifferent methods and solution chemistries are not interchangeable.
Exposure durationThe exact duration required by the drawing, standard or customer specificationISO 9227 does not prescribe one duration for every coating or product.
Acceptance criterionWhat is evaluated, where it is evaluated and the permitted resultHours alone are incomplete without a defined failure criterion.
Specimen and preparationProduction parts or panels, significant surfaces, edge treatment and any preconditioningSpecimen preparation can materially affect the result.
Use of the resultQuality-control or specification-compliance purposeISO 9227 states that salt spray is not intended to rank different materials or predict long-term field corrosion resistance.

Do not convert salt-spray hours into service life. Field performance depends on the complete coating system, substrate, geometry, handling and real exposure environment.

FASTENERS

Use ISO 4042 as the fastener-specific reference

ISO 4042 specifies requirements for steel fasteners with electroplated coating systems and includes measures intended to minimize hydrogen-embrittlement risk. The complete coating designation and purchaser requirements must still be agreed.

COMPONENTS

Use ISO 19598 within its iron-or-steel and Cr(VI)-free scope

ISO 19598 covers electroplated zinc and zinc-alloy coatings on iron or steel with supplementary Cr(VI)-free treatment. Confirm that its scope and coating designation match the component and contract.

PURCHASER INPUT

Do not specify zinc plating by colour alone

Colour or passivation is only one attribute. Also identify the substrate and strength, significant surfaces, thickness or coating designation, sealant or top coat if required, corrosion test requirement and acceptance criterion.

PROCESS REVIEW

Flag high-strength or hardened steel before quotation

Provide property class, tensile strength or hardness where applicable. The risk controls and suitability of an electrolytic route must be reviewed against the governing specification before processing.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is passivation colour enough to specify the coating?

No. Also state the governing standard or coating designation, substrate, significant surfaces, thickness or performance criteria and any sealant, top coat, lubricant or reporting requirement.

Which reference applies to electroplated fasteners?

ISO 4042 is the fastener-specific electroplated coating-system reference. The purchase specification and contractually adopted edition remain final.

Can salt-spray and thickness reports be requested?

Yes, when applicable and agreed. Provide the test method, sampling, duration and acceptance criteria in the RFQ.

BUILD ONE MULTI-ITEM RFQ

Ready to specify Zinc Electroplating?

Describe the supplied parts, define the coating and reporting requirements, then provide buyer and delivery details once at the end.
