ZINC-NICKEL · ISO 4042 / ISO 19598 REFERENCE

Zinc-Nickel Plating for Industrial Components

Zinc-nickel is an electroplated zinc-alloy coating system. A complete RFQ identifies the iron or steel substrate, component and strength condition, coating designation, supplementary treatment, significant surfaces, thickness and contract-defined corrosion-performance evidence.

TECHNICAL SUMMARY

What to include in the inquiry

Use the applicable drawing and governing standard as the final authority. Other / Custom keeps unusual requirements inside the same RFQ.

ProcessElectroplated zinc-nickel alloy coating system
ReferencesISO 4042 for fasteners; ISO 19598 where its iron / steel and Cr(VI)-free scope applies
Finish inquirySilver, Black or Other / Custom
Corrosion requirementBhartee-recommended for review or customer-specified test duration
Critical inputsSubstrate / strength, coating designation, supplementary treatment and significant surfaces
Report optionsDFT / coating-thickness and salt-spray reports when specified

TECHNICAL REFERENCE

Coating and inspection tables

These tables identify the applicable technical reference and the information that must be agreed in the purchase specification. They do not replace the governing standard, drawing or customer acceptance criteria.

What an inspection report should identify

Report content must follow the purchase order, governing standard and agreed inspection plan.

EvidenceWhat must be identifiedImportant boundary
Coating-thickness / DFT reportPart or lot identity, measurement method, measurement locations, units and recorded valuesThe method must suit the coating/substrate combination and part geometry; DFT is not a universal method name for every metallic coating.
Salt-spray reportTest standard and mode, specimen identity, exposure duration, evaluation intervals and agreed failure criterionA pass/fail conclusion requires acceptance criteria from the product or customer specification.
Visual and coverage inspectionSignificant surfaces, coverage, visible defects and any permitted contact or rack marksAppearance limits must be agreed; colour alone does not establish coating performance.
Functional verificationThread fit, masking, contact areas, dimensional limits or other drawing-defined featuresThe required checks depend on the component and are not implied by the coating name.

Reports are available when specified in the RFQ and confirmed in the quotation. Sampling, laboratories, witness points and acceptance criteria must be agreed before processing.

How to specify a salt-spray requirement

ISO 9227 defines the chamber, reagents and procedures for NSS, AASS and CASS testing. It does not assign a universal exposure period to a product.

RFQ itemBuyer should stateWhy it matters
Test methodThe governing product specification and the required salt-spray mode, such as NSS when applicableDifferent methods and solution chemistries are not interchangeable.
Exposure durationThe exact duration required by the drawing, standard or customer specificationISO 9227 does not prescribe one duration for every coating or product.
Acceptance criterionWhat is evaluated, where it is evaluated and the permitted resultHours alone are incomplete without a defined failure criterion.
Specimen and preparationProduction parts or panels, significant surfaces, edge treatment and any preconditioningSpecimen preparation can materially affect the result.
Use of the resultQuality-control or specification-compliance purposeISO 9227 states that salt spray is not intended to rank different materials or predict long-term field corrosion resistance.

Do not convert salt-spray hours into service life. Field performance depends on the complete coating system, substrate, geometry, handling and real exposure environment.

STANDARD SCOPE

Use the fastener or component reference that matches the part

ISO 4042 governs electroplated coating systems on fasteners. ISO 19598 applies to zinc and zinc-alloy coatings on iron or steel with supplementary Cr(VI)-free treatment. Confirm the coating designation required by the contract.

SYSTEM DEFINITION

Specify more than silver or black

Finish colour does not define alloy composition, passivation, sealant, top coat, lubricant, thickness or corrosion requirement. Record every attribute that affects conformity.

CORROSION TEST

Enter the project duration and failure criterion

The inquiry deliberately avoids preset salt-spray hours. State the governing test, exposure duration, significant surfaces and permitted result from the customer or product specification.

MATERIAL REVIEW

Identify high-tensile and hardened parts

Property class, tensile strength or hardness must be disclosed so process controls and any hydrogen-embrittlement requirements can be reviewed before quotation.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Why are fixed salt-spray hours not shown?

Because the exposure duration and acceptance criteria must come from the governing customer or product specification. ISO 9227 does not assign one duration to all zinc-nickel systems.

Does black zinc-nickel automatically have a specific performance level?

No. Colour alone does not define the complete coating system or its acceptance criteria.

Which material information is required?

Provide the substrate, property class or tensile-strength / hardness information and relevant heat-treatment condition.
