Zinc-Flake Coating Systems for Steel Fasteners

ISO 10683 covers non-electrolytically applied zinc-flake coating systems for steel fasteners, with or without top coat and lubricant. The RFQ should identify the fastener, substrate condition, complete coating-system requirement, friction or assembly requirement and contract-defined inspection evidence.

What an inspection report should identify

Report content must follow the purchase order, governing standard and agreed inspection plan.

Reports are available when specified in the RFQ and confirmed in the quotation. Sampling, laboratories, witness points and acceptance criteria must be agreed before processing.

How to specify a salt-spray requirement

ISO 9227 defines the chamber, reagents and procedures for NSS, AASS and CASS testing. It does not assign a universal exposure period to a product.

Do not convert salt-spray hours into service life. Field performance depends on the complete coating system, substrate, geometry, handling and real exposure environment.

SCOPE

Use ISO 10683 for the defined steel-fastener route

The standard applies to bolts, screws, studs, nuts and non-threaded fasteners such as washers, pins and clips. It does not cover mechanically applied zinc coatings.

HIGH-STRENGTH FASTENERS

Review the complete coating and assembly system

ISO 10683 notes use on high-strength fasteners to avoid internal hydrogen embrittlement associated with electrolytic deposition. This does not remove the need to identify material strength, preprocessing and all project controls.

FRICTION

State lubricant or friction requirements explicitly

Integral or subsequently added lubricant can be part of the coating system. For tightened joints, provide the governing torque–tension or coefficient-of-friction requirement rather than assuming one from the finish name.

CORROSION

Tie salt-spray evidence to the product specification

Provide the test mode, duration, evaluation and permitted result. Salt-spray test hours must not be presented as predicted outdoor life.

Is zinc-flake an electroplated coating?

No. ISO 10683 covers non-electrolytically applied zinc-flake coating systems.

Does ISO 10683 cover mechanically applied zinc?

No. The standard scope explicitly excludes mechanically applied zinc coatings.

Should friction be stated in the RFQ?

Yes when tightening performance matters. State the governing lubricant, coefficient-of-friction or torque–tension requirement from the assembly specification.
