ELECTROLESS NICKEL · ISO 4527 REFERENCE

Electroless Nickel-Phosphorus Plating for Precision Parts

ISO 4527 specifies requirements and test methods for autocatalytic nickel-phosphorus alloy coatings applied from aqueous solutions to metallic substrates. A useful RFQ defines the substrate, component geometry, coating designation, phosphorus requirement when specified, thickness, heat treatment, significant surfaces and tests.

TECHNICAL REFERENCE

Coating and inspection tables

These tables identify the applicable technical reference and the information that must be agreed in the purchase specification. They do not replace the governing standard, drawing or customer acceptance criteria.

Technical fieldBuyer inputWhy it is required
SubstrateMaterial, alloy, condition and prior heat treatmentPretreatment and coating-system selection depend on the basis material
Coating chemistryISO 4527 nickel-phosphorus designation or customer specificationThe standard does not cover nickel-boron, composites or ternary alloys
Phosphorus / propertiesComposition category and property requirement only when specifiedCategory names do not replace numerical acceptance criteria in the governing document

What an inspection report should identify

Report content must follow the purchase order, governing standard and agreed inspection plan.

EvidenceWhat must be identifiedImportant boundary
Coating-thickness / DFT reportPart or lot identity, measurement method, measurement locations, units and recorded valuesThe method must suit the coating/substrate combination and part geometry; DFT is not a universal method name for every metallic coating.
Salt-spray reportTest standard and mode, specimen identity, exposure duration, evaluation intervals and agreed failure criterionA pass/fail conclusion requires acceptance criteria from the product or customer specification.
Visual and coverage inspectionSignificant surfaces, coverage, visible defects and any permitted contact or rack marksAppearance limits must be agreed; colour alone does not establish coating performance.
Functional verificationThread fit, masking, contact areas, dimensional limits or other drawing-defined featuresThe required checks depend on the component and are not implied by the coating name.

Reports are available when specified in the RFQ and confirmed in the quotation. Sampling, laboratories, witness points and acceptance criteria must be agreed before processing.

SCOPE

Confirm that the requested deposit is nickel-phosphorus

ISO 4527 does not cover nickel-boron alloy coatings, nickel-phosphorus composites or ternary alloys. Identify the exact coating chemistry required by the drawing or project specification.

PHOSPHORUS REQUIREMENT

Use low, medium or high only when the specification defines it

The form allows Bhartee-recommended review or a customer-defined category. The final composition requirement and acceptance method must come from the governing specification.

GEOMETRY

Identify significant bores, recesses and dimensional interfaces

Autocatalytic deposition can be selected for complex precision parts, but the drawing must still identify surfaces, masking, dimensional allowances and measurement locations.

POST-TREATMENT

State heat-treatment and property requirements

Any pre- or post-coating heat treatment, hardness, adhesion, porosity, corrosion or wear requirement must be specified rather than inferred from the process name.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What coating chemistry does ISO 4527 cover?

Autocatalytic nickel-phosphorus alloy coatings applied from aqueous solutions to metallic substrates.

Does ISO 4527 cover nickel-boron or composite ENP?

No. Its published scope excludes nickel-boron alloy coatings, nickel-phosphorus composites and ternary alloys.

Should phosphorus content always be selected?

Only when the governing specification requires it. Otherwise use Bhartee-recommended review and provide the functional requirements.
