Engineering Silver Plating for Electrical Components

ISO 4521 covers electrodeposited silver and silver-alloy coatings for electrical, electronic and other engineering uses where the coating serves a non-decorative purpose. The RFQ should identify the basis material and finish, undercoat, significant contact surfaces, thickness and functional inspection requirement.

Report content must follow the purchase order, governing standard and agreed inspection plan.

Reports are available when specified in the RFQ and confirmed in the quotation. Sampling, laboratories, witness points and acceptance criteria must be agreed before processing.

ENGINEERING SCOPE

Use ISO 4521 for non-decorative engineering applications

The published scope covers electrical, electronic and other engineering uses and includes test methods. It excludes coatings on screw threads and unfabricated sheet, strip or wire.

BASIS SURFACE

State the incoming surface finish and roughness

ISO notes that appearance and serviceability depend on the basis-material condition. Define the required finish, roughness and preparation rather than relying on the silver deposit to correct the substrate.

CONTACT FUNCTION

Mark significant electrical and wear surfaces

Identify current-carrying interfaces, contact zones, sliding or wear areas, masking, permitted rack marks and any thickness gradient limits.

UNDERCOAT AND TESTS

Specify the complete deposit stack and functional criteria

State any required undercoat, silver or alloy designation, thickness, adhesion, electrical, wear, porosity or other project tests. The final acceptance criteria must come from the governing specification.
