Hot-Dip Galvanizing for Fasteners and Fabricated Steel

Hot-dip galvanized threaded fasteners and fabricated iron or steel articles follow different scope routes. The inquiry must identify the component type before coating thickness, thread handling, venting, drainage, masking, dimensions, weight and inspection requirements can be reviewed.

What an inspection report should identify

Report content must follow the purchase order, governing standard and agreed inspection plan.

Reports are available when specified in the RFQ and confirmed in the quotation. Sampling, laboratories, witness points and acceptance criteria must be agreed before processing.

THREADED FASTENERS

Use ISO 10684 for hot-dip galvanized fasteners

ISO 10684 is the product-specific reference for hot-dip spun galvanized threaded steel fasteners within its dimensional and property-class scope. Thread allowance and mating compatibility require explicit review.

FABRICATED ARTICLES

Use ISO 1461 for fabricated iron and steel articles

ISO 1461 covers general properties and test methods for batch hot-dip galvanized fabricated iron and steel articles. Its scope excludes products such as fasteners where a specific standard exists.

DESIGN FOR GALVANIZING

Provide geometry, size, weight and closed-section details

Fabricated parts may require process-specific review of venting, drainage, lifting, distortion risk, overlapping surfaces and trapped volumes. Supply the drawing for non-simple fabrications.

THREADS AND MASKING

State which features must remain functional

Identify internal and external threads, fitted areas, electrical-contact surfaces, masking and any permitted re-tapping or post-processing. These requirements affect feasibility and price.

Does ISO 1461 apply to threaded fasteners?

ISO 1461 excludes products such as fasteners where a specific product standard exists. ISO 10684 is the fastener-specific hot-dip galvanized coating reference.

Why must thread treatment be stated?

Hot-dip zinc affects thread dimensions and mating. Masking, allowance, re-tapping or other handling must be agreed for functional threads.

What should be provided for a fabricated part?

Provide material, drawing, maximum dimensions or weight, closed-section and vent / drain details, masking, significant surfaces and inspection requirements.
